Paul Shorthouse has been working with the GLOBE Group (www.globe.ca) since March 2009 as the organization's Director of Research and Strategic Planning. In this role, Paul assists with corporate strategy development and implementation, business development, client relationship management, project management, budget and cost control, market research and public policy review, report and proposal writing, event planning and coordination, and marketing and communications.
As Director of Research and Strategic Planning for GLOBE Advisors (www.globeadvisors.ca), Paul has been involved in managing a number of comprehensive projects on the green economy in Canada and the United States. His work has helped to advance opportunities, develop solutions to barriers and challenges, and forge sustainable economic development strategies in order to promote the energy and resource efficiency, increase investment, and stimulate job creation.
Paul also serves as Director of Conference Programming for GLOBE Events where he is responsible for overseeing program development for this international summit on “business and sustainability”, considered one of the largest events of its type in the world (see www.globeseries.com). In 2012, the GLOBE Conference and Trade Fair attracted 1,800 delegates and participants from more than 55 countries – of which approximately 650 were CEOs and / or Presidents of their organizations.
In 2011, Paul helped launch the inaugural GLOBE Latin America Conference in San Jose, Costa Rica, bringing together business leaders and sustainability experts from around the region to address issues related to clean energy development, sustainable cities and transportation, water supply, finance and investment, carbon management, and corporate sustainability (see www.globe2011.com).
Paul’s other work with the GLOBE Group has included researching and writing articles for the GLOBE-Net Environmental News website (see www.globe-net.com) and updating GLOBE’s Primer on Climate Change and Carbon Markets, consolidating multiple information sources to produce a comprehensive report on the subject.
Paul has been part of a number of project-based advisory groups on the green economy in Canada, and is currently on the Program Advisory Committees for BCIT's School of Business and UBC's Master of Engineering in Clean Energy. Paul also played an advisory role to the City of Victoria's Green and Healthy Economy initiative and was an active member on two City of Vancouver External Adivsory Committees on "Climate Leadership" and the "Green Economy", working closely with the City and the Vancouver Economic Commission (VEC) in their efforts to make Vancouver the Greenest City in the World by 2020.
Paul has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Victoria (UVic), a certificate in Environmental Stewardship from Camosun College, and a Diploma of Technology in Marketing Management and Entrepreneurship from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). Prior to his time with the GLOBE Group, Paul worked in the eco-tourism sector and as a SCUBA dive biologist and instructor in Canada, Thailand, the Philippines, and Australia.
